UNIC Project at the International Paris Air Show, June 2025

UNIC, short for Understanding Non-CO₂ impact for deCarbonized Aviation, brings together a consortium of 11 partners from leading research institutions, universities, and industry players across Europe, Switzerland, and Canada. The project is jointly funded by the EU Horizon Europe programme, under the call “Accelerating climate neutral aviation, minimising non-CO₂ emissions”, by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation, and with significant contributions from the National Research Council of Canada.

The project aims to:

  • Develop new sensor technologies for in-flight emissions measurements,
  • Advance scientific understanding of the impacts of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) and hydrogen (H₂) on non-CO₂ emissions,
  • Improve atmospheric models with new data on contrail dynamics, and
  • Provide insights to help inform future aviation climate policy.

The UNIC consortium includes: Cardiff University, ENV-ISA, Manchester Metropolitan University, National Research Council Canada, ONERA – The French Aerospace Lab, Pegasor Oy, SMHI, Tampere University, University of Helsinki, University of Reading, and ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences.
